Welcome to 2013-2014 Academic School Year

Announcement of new school hours

Dear Parents,

On behalf of the management and staff of Zaman International School, I am pleased to welcome you to the 2013-2014 school year.  We are looking forward to yet another successful year in partnering with you in achieving the academic potential of your child and in enhancing a conducive environment for knowledge.

In line with the new academic beginning, I am excited to inform you about changes that will be implemented that will benefit your child. As a pilot project, subject to close observation and with consultation of your valuable input, we will extend the school week to include Saturday mornings. The pilot project will last until the end of the first exam session (November). Thus, on weekdays, formal lessons will start as usual at 7.30am and end at 3pm and on Saturdays; lessons will start at 7.30am and end at 12pm.

The benefits of having this change are as follows:

First of all, the new balance of classes lowers the pressure on your child. As you are aware, at Zaman, we follow two curricula – the Cambodian National curriculum and an International curriculum. Scheduling lessons to cover the content for both the state program and the international program inevitably puts a lot of pressure on students.  By having formal lessons on Saturdays, your child is able to have a more relaxed week with the flexibility of having extra time at their disposal to use constructively. Invariably, this also leads to a better learning structure with less stress on your child.

Secondly, every grade will now have a P.E. (Physical Education). The new time change enables us to move the club hour out of the regular formal lesson hours, allowing us to have more time slots to offer P.E which we recognize as an important education in the overall development of your child.

The third point is your child will have more opportunities for extra-curricular activities. In the past, your child had time for only one club activity. With the change in time, your child now has the flexibility of having one or two club activities, based on their preference and availability of space in the desired club. With this availability of time, students will now have the chance to propose new activities after formal lesson hours, needless to say after consultation and agreement with the school. Apart from the knowledge gained through academics, your child now has the chance to gather more skills that will assist in his/her personal development whilst being in the safe environment of our school.

Fourthly, your child will have more time to prepare for competitions and achieve success. At Zaman, we encourage our students to participate at competitions such as the project Olympiads (USA, the Netherlands, and Indonesia) and sports. The new time arrangement will enable us to roll out a rigorous plan to prepare students for lesson reviews and sports training that ultimately lead to your child’s success.

Finally, as a parent you receive a healthy return of the investment of your child at Zaman. With a 5 day tuition fees payment structure, your child now receives a more effective and well-rounded developmental program that stretches to 6 days.

All in all, please know that the change in time was taken in consideration of your child and in how well we can offer the best possible education for our students who are the future generation of Cambodia and the world. I would like to remind you once again that this is a pilot project which is subject to change in the event the roll-out of our well-intended plan doesn’t work out. We welcome any comments, feedback or suggestions that you may have.

Yours sincerely,

Mustafa Guler, Principal
